Volunteering Program
What you can expect
At our Nursery School, the program kicks off at 7 a.m., though early arrival isn’t mandatory. You’re welcome to join us around 10 a.m. and assist the teachers until 1 p.m. A lunch break usually follows around 1 p.m., with afternoon supervision starting at 2 p.m. Our activities vary, from educational videos and reading sessions to math or English exercises, or simply indulging in drawing. Your help, alongside other volunteers, during these two hours would greatly support us in tackling other necessary tasks. Following that, you’ll have the freedom to contribute to program design.
Every Saturday, we invite children to play together on a spacious meadow. Kids of all ages from across the village gather, always excited to welcome new faces and playmates. Should you wish, your presence alone can brighten their time.
The program outlined above forms our typical routine, but we’re open to suggestions. If you feel you can assist us in other ways, just let us know. We welcome any form of support, especially in generating social media content and launching a fundraising campaign for our own school building.
Living with us
Volunteers live with Francis, Aidah, their daughter Hannah and their adopted children Jane and Darius in one shared house. We have a room for three volunteers, one bedroom for the family and a living room. The bathroom and kitchen are located outside the main house in separate small buildings, but everything is within a gated area that provides privacy from the surroundings. If you have any concerns during your stay, please feel free to talk to us. We consider you members of our family and want to ensure you feel comfortable and well.
Our living facilities differ from those in more affluent regions. We provide a bucket shower and squat toilet, which may take a bit of getting used to initially but typically becomes comfortable within a day or two.
Unfortunately, we do charge a nominal fee of $6 for accommodation, which includes three meals per day. This contribution helps sustain our operations and ensures continued support for our educational initiatives.
What else?
Take advantage of your downtime to explore the beauty of our country and immerse yourself in our rich culture. If you’re considering a safari or other excursions, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. We’re committed to ensuring you have the most memorable stay possible in Uganda. Whether your adventures extend beyond the weekend or not, feel free to pursue whatever interests you and savor what could be the best weeks of your life. We’d be delighted to be kept informed about your plans.
Moreover, you’re encouraged to tend to your other obligations whenever necessary. Your duties and personal tasks always come first, without question. Although we can’t provide WiFi onsite, mobile data prices in the area are incredibly affordable (22GB for $13). Alternatively, numerous restaurants and cafes in the city center offer comfortable settings where you can access the internet at your convenience.
If our program intrigues you or if you have any inquiries, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us through our contact form. We’re eager to connect with you and learn more about your interests.
